Frequently Asked Questions

  • A doula is a trained birth support person who stays with you through labor, start to finish. I'm not a medical provider. I won't be delivering your baby or making clinical decisions. What I will do is help you understand what's happening, support you physically and emotionally through contractions, advocate for your wishes with your care team, and make sure you and your support person never feel alone in that room. Before birth, I'll help you prepare. After birth, I'll check in and make sure you're landing okay.

  • Yes, yes, and yes. I support all birth choices in all settings. An epidural doesn't mean you don't need support. A cesarean doesn't mean you don't deserve someone in your corner. I'll be there however your birth unfolds.

  • It happens! We'll talk through this during your prenatal visits so you have a plan. I'm on-call for you starting at 38 weeks, and I'll get to you as fast as I can. In the meantime, I'll make sure you and your support person know exactly what to do.

  • A midwife is a medical provider who monitors you and your baby's health and can deliver your baby. A doula’s role is not medical. Think of a midwife as your clinical care and a doula as your continuous human support. We work really well alongside each other.

  • Your OB or midwife is focused on keeping you and your baby medically safe, which is their whole job and an important one. But they're also managing other patients, making clinical decisions, and often not in the room with you for most of labor. A doula is there the entire time, focused entirely on you and supporting your birthing experience.

  • Woohoo! That's the goal. A good doula makes your support person better, not redundant. I'll prep BOTH of you before the birth, coach them in real time, give them things to do, and make sure they feel confident instead of helpless. Most support people tell me afterward that having a doula made their experience better, too.

  • As early as you'd like. Some families reach out in the first trimester, others in the third. I'd say don't wait past 30 weeks so we have enough time to build a real relationship before your birth.

  • Yes, please! Kinfolk Birth Co. is for every kind of family and every kind of birth. You deserve support that sees you fully and meets you exactly where you are.

  • Yes. In Hampton Roads, we have one of the largest military populations in the country! I understand the unique challenges that comes with — deployments, frequent moves, navigating Tricare, birthing without extended family nearby. If that resonates with you, let’s talk.

  • Then we adapt. Birth is unpredictable and that's okay. My job isn't to make sure your birth goes a certain way — it's to make sure you feel informed, supported, and respected no matter what happens. An unexpected cesarean, a change in pain management plans, a transfer from a birth center; whatever happens will be part of your story. I’m here to help make it a good one.

  • Discovery calls exist for exactly this reason! We get on a call, you ask me everything you want to know, I'll be honest with you about my experience and approach, and we'll both know pretty quickly. No pressure and no commitment.
